Beyond Burnout: How Grounding in Your Strengths is Your Key to Sustainable Success
Do more of what you’re good at and less of what you’re not.
If that’s all you read, we’re good here. But since I’m chatty …
When it comes to why using your strengths is so foundational, your business is no different than a sports team, an economy, or the human body. Let me explain.
In football, it wouldn’t make any sense for the quarterback to try to play all the positions. He’s great at leading and throwing, so that’s what he does. The largest, strongest teammates clog up the middle of the field and protect him. The fastest ones run on the perimeter and try to score. And the coach? Dear Lord, he’s not out there playing. But he’s setting goals, giving directions, providing feedback to create the conditions for that team to succeed. What about you in your business - are you the coach, quarterback, lineman, or receiver? Are you trying to be all of them?
Your business is like an economy, too. Sure, if you leave everything unchecked it’ll get chaotic and corrupted really quick, but you also can’t insert yourself into everything from the top-down and expect it to take off. That’s never worked in history and instead has created all sorts of problems. But when there’s the right balance of guidelines keeping things from too much chaos with the freedom for people to add value how they can, want to, and are good at, we all benefit more than in the alternatives (and people surprise you with the cool stuff they’re into). Don’t try to do everything yourself in your business - do what you’re best at and surround yourself with people who are great at the other stuff, whether full-time or otherwise. You’ll get more out of your business that way. (And if it’s processes, procedures, workflows, or strategic planning you don’t love but could use - I’m raising my hand and waving at ya!).
I presented on this topic at Nerd Nite Buffalo, a venue where speakers are asked to be informative and entertaining on a topic of their choice. I shared the scientific research I’ve learned to apply in my life that’s helped me battle depression, improve my well-being, AND find the clarity to create a business I enjoy.
We’re dead pretty quickly without the heart, but we’d die just as quickly if that heart tried to digest our food. (Am I losing some of you?) If you’re the heart of your business, be the heart. Keep the pulse, give the other organs the lifeblood they need in order to do what they do best, and let them do their thing.
How I’m Doing It
I hired Alisa Tiburzi to help me with my social media. Before that I spent my first 6 months in business stressing, working against the grain of my strengths trying to do it myself because “I’m an entrepreneur! The whole point is to do everything.” Nay, Daniel. Nay. After one month with Alisa, I’m reaching 2,100% more people, albeit from very low baselines but progress is progress, baby! And I have none of the stress of trying to force myself to do social media. We even have fun together! Soooo …
